"Asturias The World's Cultural Heritage: 25th Anniversary of the Prince of Asturias Award"
2005 marks the twenty-fifth year since the Prince of Asturias Awards were created. UNESCO has heralded the occasion with an unprecedented statement acknowledging "the Prince of Asturias Awards' outstanding contribution towards mankind's cultural heritage" and by deciding to lend its support to events celebrating the Foundation's twenty-fifth anniversary. The aim is for Asturias to become "the world's cultural capital" over the period. The celebrations also have the official support of the governments of Spain and the Principality of Asturias.
The events organised by the Foundation will last until October 2006. Outstanding Laureates who have received the Prince of Asturias Awards in their different fields and who constitute what has come to be called "Mankind's roll of Honour" will be welcomed back to Asturias in the course of the celebration period.
